Has anyone run this yet? I\'d like to try it but I\'m curious if it saves the boinc data files back to the USB key or to the hard drive of the system. Will I be able to switch between the USB linux and the game console easily without having to reconfigure things everytime I switch?

I\'ve have installed linux long ago but I\'m afraid of losing saved game data that I can\'t copy off (like copy protected EA saved game data).

All the data is saved on the pendrive. The hard drive is not used at all.
Depending on the Linux you have installed, it may be necessary to reinstal the original otheros.bld. We have tried and it works, but I would not guarantee it.

Oops, I had a typo up there.

I haven\'t installed linux yet so this should be easy to do.

I\'m looking forward to running this tonight when I get home from work.

Thanks. :)

Tried the pen installation and it worked (but I wasn\'t able to change username and team, so I quit...)

Correct. Without doing this the PS3 will get no further than to the k boot-line...
After re-installing otheros Linux will boot as if nothing has happened and no data have been lost...

Here\'s what I did.
Setup USB drive as in instructions steps 1 and 2.
Set all projects to no new work, wait for all work to finish and report. Be sure tasks/work tab is empty
Shut down boinc core client and boinc manager. (in Advanced view Advanced / Shut down connected core client then File / Exit )
Copy current BOINC folder from hard drive to USB drive. I renamed folder to something like \'saved_boinc\' on the USB drive so when You first boot with the USB drive it can setup however it wants. I did this because I had the feeling the old install would not be available as a drive to the new install, and it was not.
Reboot to PS3 system and install other-os on USB drive as in step 3.
Reboot with other-os
When BOINC comes up, select advanced view, then shut down connected core client and then file/exit boinc_manager.
Next copy files from saved folder into the new install folder.
-I copied the entire projects folder, overwriting new files.
-I did not copy slots as I had no work running, but if you had shutdown your old boinc with any work running or pending, you should also copy the old slots over the new slots.
-I did not copy locale
-I copied most files in the main directory from the saved to the new, except install.sh, anything boinc### or run_#####.
run the install.sh script to restart boinc core client and boinc manager.
You now are all setup with your accounts and projects just as before. Re-enable work and off it goes.

You should be able to change username and team, as with any other BOINC client!!!
There is no need of any special procedure.
What is the problem exactly?

My procedure is to preserve an exsisting setup from the hard drive. I have 3 projects attached. This avoided having to re-attach to all, wait for the the applications to downlaod again and preserves any historical stats and logs accumulated plus any custom settings in override, gui-rpc and remote-hosts files, some of which are needed for remote control by BOINCview.

I noticed this also. Normally when I download BOINC to a new computer it automatically directs me to attach to a project, thus there was not a user already set up. This is not so with the USB due to BOINC being pre-installed.

For me to set up my username I had to detach from PS3GRID and then immediately reattach by going through the normal process. Fortunately, I knew how to do this but many others will not. Is it possible to have BOINC manager preloaded but not any other projects? In this manner the user can follow normal BOINC operating procedures and attach to the project just as they would on any other computer.

Just a thought.

Tim

Also, GDF, thanks for the heads up on formatting the pendrive everything works perfectly now.
