Hello,

My current setup for BOINC on this computer is a Q6600 + 8800GTS 512MB. Up to now, I forced BOINC to only use 3+1 WU (3 CPU for WCG and 1 GPU for GPUgrid). Since I upgraded BOINC to 6.6.28, I'm now back to 4+1.

After few tests I did in the past, I noticed that 3+1 was more efficient than 4+1, on the GPUgrid end (gpu task were faster with 3+1 than 4+1).

Is there a way to force my BOINC client to go back to 3+1 ? (already have a cc_config.xml in my BOINC directory with ncpus set to 4).

Thanks again.

Set your "use at most xx % of processors" to 75%. Under preferences and ditch the <ncpus> in cc_config.

This won't work tho, because when I'll suspend GPUgrid, BOINC will only use 3 CPU for WCG.

What I want is :

When GPUgrid is enabled : 3 (WCG) + 1 (GPUgrid)
When GPUgrid is disabled : 4 (WCG) + 0

When did you run these tests? 3+1 was indeed better than 4+1 with reasonably fast GPUs.. with the old clients <6.60. I think it was in Jan 09 when we got the new clients with massively reduced cpu usage under windows and for these the was almost no performance drop going from 3+1 to 4+1. Differences of a few % are difficult to measure anyway due to the natural fluctuation in runtimes and due to the different WUs.

your system should be able to run 5 wu's....

you have to change your ncpus to 3 to force it to only use 3 cpus.

you may have to write exclusions into the cc file.

if you don't mind asnwering..... what is it that you do with you pc that you don't want all them running ??? gaming???

i have no problem doing games except 1... sins...

i have my Q6600 running 100% cores, and 97% use at most. I figured out that i need only 3 % of my pc to play cod4, COD: WAW, And HAWX... 3%. just think, and i7 that would be .5 % use.

i could see myself putting an i7 boinc at 99.5 %.

His point was that at 4+1 the gpu gets slower than at 3+1, which quickly offsets any gains from the additional core. However, as I said above, this information may be outdated.. so please, noone panic right now ;)

I did tests at the end on january yeah, so they might be a bit outdated. Well I'll retry 3+1 vs 4+1 and see if anything changed :) Thanks :p
