i have bought a 9400 gt pci, 64 bit, 512 mb to add to my fleet of nvid gpu bring the total to 3....

i let my 260 crunch aqua, seti, and gpugrid....

if i add the 9400 pci to my xps 420 rig with gtx 260, will boinc give a gpugrid wu to a 32 core card even though it's way too much for it?

It should, since the card supports cuda. But with 16 SP's, it is kinda sloow.

That has been sort of a problem from the start of this project...GPU's with less than 50 SP's can do the work...But not in the time allowed by the project....

well, i have options with the card....

i can put it in my mothers work computer which already has a pci-e slot filled by another 9400 gt, or i could put it in my other computer which still uses on-board graphics with no pci-e slot avail.

i wish their was a way to let aqua and seti run on it, and let gpugrid run on the gtx 260.....

idk, when i get it, and put it in, i'll just have to play with it.

simply put, i wish boinc was more custom user settings where i could choose.

Run Aqua on the slow card, as Aqua gives you lots of time to finish (4-6weeks)! Aqua runs many different types of work units and some do not utilise all of the GPU’s capabilities (a bit of a waste, especially faster cards).
Run the GTX260 Exclusively for GPU-GRID, because GPU-GRID can better utilise the G200 core of the GTX260 (Compute Capable 1.3), effectively giving you a 41% increase in processing performance.
I would not run both Aqua and GPU-GRID at the same time on the same card as lots of WU’s will get cancelled.

If the GTX 260 is processing normally I'd just ignore that line.

It looks like a bug with BOINC. What version were you using? It should report each card as whatever it is.

It won't however allow you to choose which card gets used for each project.

A cut and paste of the top part of the log would be good, with the OS details, cuda device info, etc. I will raise a trak ticket for the developers. PM me if you like.

that card did try to run the gpugrid task i had, and it errored out, and i believe the boinc does know the difference....

Regarding 2.5 instead of 3 GB RAM: that may very well be the joys of a 32 Bit OS. What amount of RAM is your system info showing? I bet it was about 3 GB before you put in the 9400 512MB.

Physically you have 4GB, but under a 32 Bit OS you can't use all of them, depending on how much adress space your other divces need. It's a common topic, so searching should yield many results, if you want to know more.

Regarding the errors: take a look at the 186.18 thread. Seems like these are causing problems. Try the 185 series or 182.50.

for now, i have taken the 9400 gt, and put it in the oldest computer in the house and let it crunch seti....

i think the drivers were acting crazy and the cards were fighting each other..... and boinc wasn't going to figure it out.... so, until i see a change in the drivers or boinc.... i'll stick to single gpu boinc pcs until i buy a new one.

oh yeah, after taking the card brought my ram value back to 3.00 as it should be with 32-bit....

oh, et, i know that 32bit only allows 3 gb of ram.... why in the hell do you think i want to when the lottery so i can buy 64 bit systems.... and build a green boinc farm....

Nice to hear it works now.

It's not 3 GB, it's 4 GB minus whatever your hardware needs. For example my system can use 3.5 of 4 GB with a 512 MB GPU. And you wouldn't need to buy a new windows for 64 Bit, you'd "only" need to reinstall. Retail Vista keys are valid for 32 and 64 Bit (not totally sure about OEM ones) so all you'd need would be a different DVD. Ms would send you one for a small charge (<10$) or otherwise any other source would be legal since you have a license.
By the way: I was not implying you should switch your OS. It was just that you seemed unaware of this issue.

As you've noted BOINC doesn't handled mixed-GPU configurations very well. You can have multiple GPU's but its best if they are all of the same type in the same machine.

Unfortunately until nvidia can get a 40nm chip out we are stuck with power hungry machines. Hopefully this will happen sooner rather than later, although they do have a couple of "green" cards that use less power than the standard model.

The new chips are going to be just as power hungry.. but they'll be faster for similar amounts of power ;)

Kind regards

This doesn't tell us much except that your driver install isn't totally broken. They're using different code, so a bug in these drivers may be triggered by GPU-Grid but not by their apps.

since gpu(cuda is still somewhat new to boinc...I think boinc still has fully integrated cuda/gpu's..... of different makes and models....

Rest assured that the BOINC Devs would dance a whole day if there was only a single bug left. BTW, are you referring to the "I have 2 different GPUs but only one is shown"? If both are crunching away I wouldn't mind what BOINc is showing.
