Yes, I have installed the CUDA drivers. see screenshot for details:

I do not know why BIONC isn't recognizing the GPU. I had to manually fetch libcudart.so, which I placed in boinc's directory.
other info about the machine:

AMD Phenom 2 X3 2.6GHz
2GB RAM in a single 1333MHz DDR3 stick
one GTX 260
Ubuntu 9.04 64 w/latest updates
BOINC 6.4.5 64

note that I used GIMP to quickly and crudely edit out the username

I think you also have to add the user BOINC to the group video or something like that, otherwise BOINC is not granted permissions to access the GPU.

BTW: if your X3 is running BOINC you might want to give it another stick of memory. 2 memory channels for 2 cores is plenty of bandwidth, but one channel for 3 cores will likely hamper performance, depending on the application(s). You could think of it like this: another stick for 20-30$ would be equivalent to a cpu clock speed bump of 50 - 200 MHz without increased power draw.

Okay, thanks, I just fixed it. I just did a lazy and insecure hack to get it to work. here was my solution:
terminal:
sudo gedit /etc/gnome-system-tools/users/profiles

edit file to include the following line under [Unprivileged]:

groups=video

Added user "boinc" to "video" group. Still BOINC Manager can't see any co-processors. nVidia driver 180.44. Boinc 6.4.5. Kubuntu 9.04 amd64.

Who can help?

I hope it can help (but I`m not sure - just try it):

Install BM 6.5.0 (for sure) + try one of following drivers; 180.60 or 180.44 or 173.1420.

I`m waiting for info if it work fine for u (it was helpful for me with 280GTX).

I've installed 6.6.36. It can use videocard with 180.x drivers. Without any other hacks.

How to do something like that in kubuntu? Simple adding boinc launcher's name to "video" group doesn't help...

NB: I've installed BOINC 6.6.36 instead of 6.4.5 from ubuntu repositorium... Auto-start as daemon is configured according to boinc.berkeley.edu documentation.

I made my boinc (running as daemon at system startup) starting under "root" account. If BOINC manager will not then open normally - just add an account under whict it starts to "root" group.

p.s. all described actions are actual for kubuntu 9.04
