Message boards : Multicore CPUs : New firmware refuses to boot from other than HD

I had my PS3 at least attempting to boot from USB stick the other day, but the newest firmware 2.10, which I installed last night, goes as far as turning off the lit (active) USB drive just as it boots, and the otheros.bld file you have us install sits there, and doesn\'t even bring kboot up at all.

We have had some problems with 2.01, but it did boot. Do you have 2.1 or 2.01? g

Same over here: installed 2.10...and PS3GRID won\'t start. Seems like I have to do the complete installation of Linux...

Same over here: installed 2.10...and PS3GRID won\'t start. Seems like I have to do the complete installation of Linux... I would much rather that we express our immense disdain to Sony directly. It was silly of them to make the machine switch off the USB sticks as the boot loader loads when under \"boot other OS\", as they shouldn\'t even care. I also have found that my PSP is no longer recognizable under Vista, since its last firmware update. They got some real dopes working over there. \"Give us your money...\" \"Oh, BTW, we disabled many of the functions you previously enjoyed...\" Thanks a lot, Sony! NOT!

I just loaded 2.10 last night. I had problems with 2.01 as well (my GRID debut was a couple days ago). It saw the stick, but the only tab selections were \"Linux\" and \"old\", which were from the first partition of my HD, but even they would not load from your boot loader. After loading the graphical boot loader I used to use, at least I got my HD install functions back. I\'ll have to hunt up the GRID files for that to run from within one of the installed distros I have in place. I was so wanting to have a USB bootable system, because that opens up a LOT of live distro experimentation. Maybe we can convince them to put things back the way they were. It is almost as if they are toying with their entire customer base, like it is some game. I find it more than a bit annoying.

Just to add to this - I just updated to 2.10 from 2.01 and now I can no longer boot from the USB stick grrr. Is there a way around this?

It would be good if some of those that have experiemnced this problem, to bring it to the attention of Sony Playstation developers.

It would be good if some of those that have experiemnced this problem, to bring it to the attention of Sony Playstation developers. I had the same problem but found another otheros.bld on the web and installed that. Linux is running off the usb stick but i\'m not sure if its using the 6 spe\'s as well as the 2 ppe\'s. I\'ll try to post a link to it later and let you decide Shaggy

Has anyone with this problem tried to re-install the other-os as in step 4 on the directions. It seems like to me that when upgrading the firmware to 2.10 it is clearing the other-os configuration in some way.

Has anyone with this problem tried to re-install the other-os as in step 4 on the directions. It seems like to me that when upgrading the firmware to 2.10 it is clearing the other-os configuration in some way. Yes I\'ve reinstalled Linux as per the instructions and no joy.

Has anyone with this problem tried to re-install the other-os as in step 4 on the directions. It seems like to me that when upgrading the firmware to 2.10 it is clearing the other-os configuration in some way. I\'ve tried various otheros.bld\'s and it seems only a \'standard\'one will allow linux off a usb stick but it crunch\'s very slow. Other bootloaders either do not start or will not see the usb stick at the kboot prompt. Oh well time for a partition and an install of gentoo linux. I think Sony have beefed up security as some people were gaining access to the RSX chip through linux and this may lead to firmware cracks eventually so Sony have locked up the system a bit. Has anyone with this problem tried to re-install the other-os as in step 4 on the directions. It seems like to me that when upgrading the firmware to 2.10 it is clearing the other-os configuration in some way. Mine had no change in failed behavior upon re-installing a previously USB aware otheros.bld. I was only able to get an otheros.bld file that looks at HD partitions to work, and then only for HD partitions, as I stated.

It would be good if some of those that have experiemnced this problem, to bring it to the attention of Sony Playstation developers. I said i\'d try but it would mean tracking down where i got it from and then posting the link here and i\'m not sure how much time i have to do these things. As it is the otheros.bld that i used did boot from usb but it took 8 hours to process 3% at which point i stopped and started looking for another file.

otheros.bld should affect performance. If it boots then it should be fine. We will be unable to do serious testing until after holidays unfortunately.

However, I would think that if there is a problem, it is fixable easily. Can anyone reports problems booting with 2.10? Were they fixed by reinstalling a new boot loader or the same as suggested in this thread? gdf

Coud you try to use this one here? Success!!! Thanks for sorting this out and Merry Christmas!

Coud you try to use this one here? Perhaps for you. It still does not work for a machine that has a Linux install on the HD. The only thing the otheros.bld file points at is the HD, and the tab key only shows that partition. So what is needed is the boot string required to boot from sda1, which is the device assigned to my USB drive. That boot string MIGHT point to the USB drive, which is now at least turned on. All folks garnering success from this otheros.bld file must not have any Linux on their HD. Still no worky here.

Coud you try to use this one here? It did not work for me. I have EU std 60GB version without any mods. I.e. no Linux on PS3 HD, running from Pendrive.

I updated my PS3 from fw 2.0? to fw 2.10 21.dec. After that it do not boot from usb stick anymore. Before my update, it had been chrunching since 2.dec. During this period, I have rebooted some times after playing etc. Now, no light in LED in usb stick and TV screen is black. PS3 do not seem to boot. I dl the otheros.bld file from the link above, and overwrote the one on my usbstick. When I try to start PS3 from \"other os\": Still no light in LED in usb stick and TV screen is still black. My TV (PAL) showed Linux on \"Auto\", 480i and 1080p before the fw update. I use the HDMI connection. Roald

I have three partitions with OpenSuSE 10.3, PSUbuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.04), and FedoraDog (my description)7, the one that is slower than hardened molasses :-). Depending on which otheros.bld file I load, I can boot them up, but I have to switch around as I have yet to find an otheros.bld file that allows selection of any of the installed distros I have. The SuSE boots the SuSE and the Fedora, and from CD, but won\'t boot the Ubuntu, and the Ubuntu will only boot the Ubuntu, or CD. Those are the graphical petitboot builds though. So far, with any straight, non-graphical kboot build, I only see the first partition, and it won\'t boot in many cases (ubuntu). I wish the kboot loader didn\'t need the kboot.conf file, and would allow slections based on partition. Then USB booting would seemingly be a cakewalk. Today, I began experimenting with Gentoo Live CD, and trying to get it up on a USB stick. It uses ext3 fs and if I get it working, I will add the GRID software if I can get it somewhere. Apparently, they have an otheros.usb file somewhere out there that gets renamed to the dot bld name. Gentoo\'s site also has some pretty comprehensive info on kexec, and kboot. I am still digging. I like the way their live distro boots from cd. It has all 8 birds, tab key shows all their boot selections, and that is a good sign. Once I find out how to hit the USB at boot time, I will perhaps add USB entries to the CD\'s kboot.conf file. Did you guys know that your kboot.conf file has a \"con\" extension instead of \"conf\"? What\'s up with that?

It was required to be able to copy files on the usb from Windows.
Huh? I thought that FAT32 and Windows both handled long file names. It allowed me to change mine from windows to the four letter extension. Weird. So is that also the only reason it is even on FAT32? So that a person can get the files on the stick from within a windows machine? Does that mean I can also run a Linux OS live boot, and set the stick up with an ext3 partition by copying the files to it from within Linux?

My PS3 seems to be bricked now...

My PS3 seems to be bricked now... I typically just hold the power button for three beeps and then restart the game OS. In most situations you shouldn\'t need to switch the PS3 off through the switch on the back. You\'ll still need to reset your audio/video options and don\'t forget to set it to load \"other OS\" upon reboot. Tim

It was required to be able to copy files on the usb from Windows.
I just found a good resource for this PPC64 Linux under the PS3 situation. The kboot section is very informative, and I am sure many of you already know about this site. From what it ssays, when using the three letter extension on kboot.conf, it should be a dot cnf file, not dot con. http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ For some reason, your lame filtration applet is marking my link as spam if I post as a clickable link.

But on the boinc benchmarks it only recognized 1 CPU instead of 2. This is correct, because the 6-SPE\'s cannot be shared between 2 applications without drastically affecting performance. It is better to only run 1 application and let it use all 6 SPE\'s where most of the processing takes place. It has been tested and it is better running only 1 app using 6-SPE\'s instead of 2 apps which would have to share and only have 3-SPEs. Ignore the benchmarks which can only measure the performance of the PPE CPU. It is not able to measure the performance of using the 6-SPE\'s. This has already been taken into account by the project and made adjustments. --- Now on another note: I have had 16 to 23 computers running various BOINC projects for about 3.66 years earning 3M credits. In the last 131 days I have earned another 1M credits, of which more than 1/2 of that was with my one PS3.

But on my account shows 2 CPU instead of one and i am only running ps3grid. Before this change i was running one wu at a time. The info about previous benchmark was misleading and it would have showed 1 instead of 2? and now 1 is the correct value?

But on my account shows 2 CPU instead of one and i am only running ps3grid. Before this change i was running one wu at a time. The info about previous benchmark was misleading and it would have showed 1 instead of 2? and now 1 is the correct value? This is correct, the PS3 has 2 CPU\'s in the PowerPC main processor. This would show as 2 on the website, which shows the physical capabilities of the CPU. There is an override file to limit the BOINC client to only run on 1 CPU, thus only 1 task runs at a time, but that 1 task has access to all 6 of the SPE cells. This is why the benchmarks will show 1 CPU because of this override file which is the limit being placed on the client, so the benchmarks are only for 1 CPU. If you physically had 2 tasks running, they would have to share the SPE\'s, like each would only be able to use 3 SPE\'s or wait for SPE\'s to be available, thus each task would take twice or more as long as 1, thus there is no gain to running 2 at the same time.
