My beastie finally melted down in a software sense .... and it was the majority of the problems I had recently.

Long story short .... in the end I put in a new hard disk, installed Vista 64 (was Vista 32 before), and am now backup and running. This time ...... I hope the war zone thats my account really will settle...

I am currently running Vista64 4Gb 6.6.31 GTX9800+ 512mb on 186.18. With the drivers I tried to load 190.38 from Nvidia site but Windows kept telling me the file was corrupted, so I stepped back to 186.16 64bit. I made no other downloads re drivers and CUDA other than a standard download.

I fell over GPUGRID wise four days ago, so am well out of date re the driver saga 190.38 CUDA2.2/CUDA2.3 etc. Grateful someone cast the critical eye to see if I am now setup correctly, especially re the CUDA version and if I need to download additional files on top of the standard download.

At the moment the WU running has been going for an hour and appears stable .......

*hits Murphy on the skull* :)

Zy

May I make so bold as to say you should have downloaded Windows 7 (pre Release, release) you would have liked it and it's free to use until March 2010 and then it reboots every 2 hrs until you buy :)

On my Vista 64 box with a 9800GTX+ I use 190.38 and 6.5.0 without problems, nothing else done.

Okie doke - thanks for that.

It never just rains ..... it pours - as they say. Finally got the PC sorted after a major rebuild, decide to "fill her up" and get an extra 4Gb (and have done with it), memory arrives, put it in and it goes bang ......

^&%$%^&*&^ memory was dud.

*Sigh*

.......And it was Corsair memory, very unusual for them they are reliable.

Soooooo ...... new memory module taken out last night, PC stable again, replacement memory on its way.

PCs ..... when they work they are great ..... when they dont they are a nightmare. Been fiddling with the things for 20+ years, I still "come back for more" ..... sucker bait :)

Memory does fail, but... it's also quite often a matter of settings: the primary timings, the millions of usually hidden timing options which the bios has to take care of and the voltage. Furthermore there's possible incompatibility between new and existing modules. We've come a long way in this regard from the "dark ages", but occasionally such problems still show up.
