Actually the question is; is it ok to make money as a DC Project & would it be better then getting grants & donations?

As I have read in many threads, there is a lot of enthuiasm in DC Projects, not just GPUGRID, but also other BOINC & even non-BOINC Projects. Voluteer Computing is often dependant on donations of hardware, money, & grants. But the bottom line is that everything costs money & nothing is for free.

So I ask, when hardware vendors also can make money on the goodness of people willing to support DC Projects, can DC Projects sell hardware with the necessary software to volunteers, make money, & help medical research?

If Charites for Aids &/or Cancer Research has people willing to donate $1000 or more anually, maybe DC Projects can offer PC's to people with interest in donating to these or other fields of research? Instead of getting a Thank You for your support in fighting AIDS/Cancer/Mental Disorders/Etc, etc. People can spend cash, get a PC that they can run 24/7 at home to help out & still have something that they can use for other things if they so wish.

There was this old thread from 2008/2009 Newegg donating a small commission to BOINC Project Where I see that it had previously been tried to gain a small commission via sales of PC's & PC components needed for DC Project Contributors who wish to purchase a new PC or upgrade an existing PC. Since GPUGRID actively gives free advice to people who ask about components, would there be anything wrong with offering advice, link, & gain a commission?

While it could result in some financial gain for GPUGRID I am not sure GPUGrid would want to endorse one online retail outlet over another. It would be unlikely to yield enough finances to bring in new staff, but perhaps could bring in some equipment.
If GPUGrid are not keen on the idea perhaps someone in the USA could add a link on their website, associate it with a PayPal account or something, so users could click on it, go to New Egg (or other e-retailer) and when they make a purchase that PayPal account would be credited with a small fee, which could then be passed on to GPUGrid.
I would be quite happy to do this in the UK, but it would probably take about 200 clicks & purchases per year to make it worthwhile, so more chance in the USA or mainland Europe.
