Which version of BOINC do you use?
You'll need a version > 6.3.5 to use your GPU for BOINC.
The newest version is now 6.3.8 and can be downloaded here.

But I just saw you use Vista 64, so you'll have to wait for a new BOINC version because on BOINC 6.3.8 the client is crashing at startup...

Does BOINC recognize the coprocessor?

At BOINC startup you should see something like

CUDA devices found
Coprocessor: GeForce ...

in the messages tab of the BOINC Manager.

I think I read that 6.3.10 contains the fix. 6.3.9. was already too far when the fix arrived.

Guess we'll have to wait for the next version... ;)

BOINC is now running, but it doesn't recognize the coprocessor and GPU tasks error out immediately.

It only shows -
CUDA devices found
Coprocessor: device emulation (CPU)(1)

which seems not right to me...

Anyway, I just sent a bug report to BOINC Alpha and GDF, let's see what they can do for us.

On XP 32 I also had my WUs fail within a minute, but using driver 177.35 seems to have solved it (see seperate thread). Maybe that could help you guys as well?

I don't think so.
BOINC should show a GTX260 and not the device emulation on my computer...
I think there's still something wrong with the CUDA detection on Vista64.

Yeah that means it's trying to use software (CPU) to run the CUDA prog :(

I am havving this same issue, is there any way to get this right?

I have driver version 177.92 With an 8600GT GPU.

The Folding@Home GPU client seems to work just fine on this setup

I think I have to try that one, when I get back home... as through RemoteDesktop CUDA/GPU is not available.

!!edit!!
I have this same error, so first we need the DLL and then we can test...

!!edit2!!
I found that the cutil32.dll is part of the CUDA SDK (as it seems) perhaps try to install that one to.

!!edit3!!
I installed the CUDA SDK, and the deviceQuery.exe is a part of it, I am able to run this, so when I get back home I can run it to see what comes back, as the GPU is not available through RemoteDesktop

Run the same exe please:
http://www.multiscalelab.org/grid/en/HelpNvidiaGPU#preview

You need the cudart.dll distributed with the application, not the one distributed with BOINC and cutil32.dll which is downloadable from the page above.

These fields are important. Device emulation had Major number < 1.
The Device name is what is reported by BOINC.

Let's see what is for the others.

Which is wrong. Can you paste the all text here to see if even the other fields are wrong? Can we have some more users reports?

Also it would be interesting to try the 64 bit version of deviceQuery.exe for Windows, if anyone can compile the CUDA SDK using the CUDA toolkit on a 64 bit windows, deviceQuery is in the SDK.

Robinsky have you installed the 32bit or 64 bit SDK?
I installed the 64bit SDK but could only find a cutil64.dll in ...\NVIDIA CUDA SDK\bin\win64\EmuRelease\

I installed the 64bit, which has a 64.dll, but in the SDK\bin\win64\Release\ folder you can find the deviceQuery.exe which works, so it is better to run this one.

EDIT.. No need to compile it yourself, as it is available.
I might be able to provide the deveiceQuery and perhaps supporting dll's if needed, but you might just install the CUDA SDK and have it available and working.

Even better, could people report the results of the 32 bit (provided above) and 64 bit application deviceQuery.

Ok, maybe we need to distribute a Win64 application.
Even though, BOINC should work as it is 64 bit and links with the 64 bit cudart.dll.
Stefan, which cudart.dll is using deviceQuery? The one from BOINC?

I don't think so, because as you can see in the path of my last post, I simply ran the deviceQuery.exe from the CUDA SDK dir...
How can I tell which cudart.sll it is using?

Here's the output from dependency walker/64bit deviceQuery.exe

From the CUDA download site. You need to download the CUDA SDK for your OS, install it and then run deviceQuery.exe from the CMD, which you can find in C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA CUDA SDK\bin\win64\Release\

You need to have CUDA Drivers (and perhaps the CUDA Toolkit) installed to!

Is this with the deviceQuery.exe provided by GDF, or with the 64bit deviceQuery.exe from the CUDA SDK?

Is it just as simple as reinstalling Boinc 6.3.10 !?!?

Or are some other steps needed? Perhaps changing the account on which boinc runs, or something else?

PS.. did he install the 64 bit version or the 32bit version of boinc?

I think I have found the problem with BOINC and GPU computing.

When boinc runs secured as boinc_master it is not able to see the GPU (Privilege problem), I just stopped the service and started boinc.exe manually as an administrator and am getting the right messages:

28-Aug-2008 20:30:09 [---] CUDA devices found
28-Aug-2008 20:30:09 [---] Coprocessor: GeForce 8600 GT (1)

So it seems to be a Vista privilege problem rather than a bug in the applications.

Exactly, reinstalling without service, nothing more

Of course, boinc x64 6.3.10 :D

Boinc is now processing a task, I am not sure if the task works correctly but it doesn't stop after 1 sec with an error. Only problem I have is that the task is using a lot of CPU, so there might still be a problem somehow!????

Haven't got the feeling the GPU is used, as I am not seeing much temperature increase, as I do see with Folding@Home.

EDIT: It also slows down my computer very much, due to this CPU usage,

Temperature of the GPU is slowly climbing up.

I Guess there is still much work left to build a nice GPU application.

EDIT2:
I think I stop the application as it slows down my machine to much to be able to use it, hope this can be made better in the future. At least we found the problem of not be able to use the GPU with the service, now we need a fix!?

So after reading all the posts, i don't need to post the result of deviceQuery!

But,on Vista 32 and 64, BOINC and deviceQuery saw only one card!

And if i install Boinc without the "secure" option, Boinc show me

CUDA devices found
Coprocessor : GeForce GTX 280 (1)

I can start with the service.
So it's rally a problem with the secure option introduce with the 6.x version!

Jim PROFIT

EDIT : without the secure mode, BOINC is not starting as a service!
I will try to find a way to do this!

It seems to work correctly here.

Only issues I have is that my computer gets really unresponsive due to a lot of CPU usage by the application. If I stop boinc and the application and run Folding@Home I don't have this issue so I guess a lot has to be done before this is usefull.

I aborted the application as it will take to much time (8 hours) and I need my computer for other things.

I guess the whole problem has to with BOINC running as a service. I might also be related to the secure option. At least we are able to run applications when we don't use the secure service mode.

I try to install it as a service and change to "Local System" and my account, but this is the same issue.

So right now, we can't install it as a service.
Maybe this is an issue with the security on the folders and files.
Right now i don't have the time to test it, maybe tomorrow evening.

We are already in touch with the BOINC group and Nvidia on the issue.
For now run it as you can...

The slow display will be sorted in one of the next application version, but it is a direct consequence of the fact that our workunits are really things that you would run on a supercomputer, so they are heavier.

PS: I still don´t understand the deviceQuery issue...

The only thing I don't get is why the application fully needs one of my CPU cores on the following hardware:

Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz
Coprocessor: GeForce 8600 GT

I hope this can be tweaked in the future, I also hope that when BOINC is better in supporting GPUs, more projects will start utilizing CUDA.

BOINC is quite good at supporting GPUs already, I think. All can be improved of course, for instance on Vista where we started to test just few days ago.
By the way thanks for finding the problem, that was very useful.
The CPU load is practically zero even it looks like is doing something. If you were running two other jobs, you would not notice much difference. It is only synchronizing calls to the GPU.

How come Folding@Home hasn't got this issue?
Next to this my machine gets very unresponsive from the application, which also suggest some issues with this. This also doesn't happen with folding@home.

Glad I could help sorting this out. Is the source code from the application available somewhere, so I might be able to look into that to, in order to look if some stuff can be optimized in respect to CPU usage/syncing.

Just start boinc.exe manually from it's folder and not as service works

It seems to be a Vista Service Privilege thing which I hope can be sorted out.

Very strange but it does not work for me.

I reinstalled BOINC and this time not as a service. BOINC now showed the GTX 260 at startup and I got 3 WUs ( 48573, 48499, 48498 ), but they all failed immediately with a nice windows-error-popup...

I'm running the project on GTX200, and as i have said, all works fine!
But with 2 cards, i can only use only for the project in both Vista 32 and 64.

Reset the project should correct the problem.

So, you have two cards on the same machine? You should be able to use both at the same time.

Which hostid are you referring to? I don't see any machine on Vista 64 crunching with your id!?? You have one with XP 64.

Which is the same error like I got it when BOINC was installed as a sevice...

But let's see what happens with the WUs that are in progress on this host.

Sorry, i made a mistake!

For this machine, i forget to reset the project when i try on Vista x64.
And this host have only a 8700M GT! So don't expect to have an incredible time.

I just try to run Boinc in Vista x64, and if i don't use the Secure Mode, Boinc show me my card.
But only one card. And i have one GTX 280 and one GTX 260 int this host
When i will be at home, i will try with my GTX 280 to see if all works fine.
These 5 hosts 7023, 7403, 7399, 6947, and 6639 are the same host but with different OS.

A question to the users with Vista64 and who are running gpugrid -

Does the acemd 6.43 application and BOINC 6.3.10 work for you if you don't install BOINC as a service?

I still have problems with Vista Ultimate 64 bit, BOINC 6.3.10 x86_64 and the 6.43 acemd application on my GTX 260.
The app crashes after one second with a Windows error message saying that the application isn't working anymore... Now I really would be interested why the application is crashing on my computer, but not on others with Vista 64? Someone else here with the same problem?

I already tried the 177.84 and 177.92 beta drivers, but with both I dave the same error.

Which drivers are you using on Vista 64? Do you use the 32- or the 64 bit BOINC Client? Anything special that have to be done, other than not to install BOINC as a service?

Thanks,
Stefan

service install is the ONLY option now with the 6.x.x series for windows.

I am running server 2008 x64 with the latest drivers (177.84) and while I haven't yet completed a work unit, I have not had any errors after running for 5 hrs on my 8800 GTS 512. I have the 64bit BOINC 6.3.10 installed. I installed both the app directory and data directory to their own directories on a non OS partition, and selected to give any user access to control BOINC.

would it be possible to put a link for the 64bit BOINC client on the home page with the 32bit win client? The 64bit clients will auto grab 32bit work when 64bit apps are not available from almost any projetc.

I'm sorry, but that's not right.

If you click the "Advanced" button on the configuration screen of the installer, and you don't select the "Protected application execution" BOINC is installed the old way.
You still would have the BOINC directories split to Program Files and ProgramData, but BOINC would not run as a service...

Here my configuration: Vista 64 bit, Nbvdia 177.92 with 64 bit, Boinc 6.3.10 with 64 bit and I clicked "Advanced" and *do not* click "Protected application execution". And it runs fine, I am happy.

Before I made a Boinc-installaton without "advanced" und run the Boinc.exe with administration rights and it crashes at the start.

Hi G,

as far as I understand it from the other posts -

If BOINC is installed as a service (protected application mode), it does not detect the coprocessor for most people on Vista64, and BOINC shows the device emulation. That way it does not work.

If BOINC is not installed as a service, it does detect the Coprocessor and it seems to work for the other users.

Unfortunately It doesn't work for me with both installation options. If I don't install BOINC as a service, it is able to detect the Coprocessor and shows the GTX 260, but all tasks error out on my computer. Still in the same way like I described it in the email I sent to you and Rom on the 29th August...

So far I have seen the following -

1)
If BOINC 6.3.10 is installed in protected mode (as a service) it does not detect my GTX 260 graphics card.
It only shows

CUDA devices found
Coprocessor: device emulation (CPU)(1)

I still can get work from GPUGRID, but all WUs error out with

<core_client_version>6.3.10</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> Das System kann den angegebenen Pfad nicht finden. (0x3) - exit code 3 (0x3) </message> <stderr_txt> Cuda error in file 'deviceQuery.cu' in line 59 : initialization error. Assertion failed: 0, file deviceQuery.cu, line 59 This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. </stderr_txt> ]]>

(Das System kann den angegeben Pfad nicht finden should mean something like "the system can't find the specified path")

2)
If BOINC is not installed as a service and I start it with the BOINC manager, it does detect the card and shows

CUDA devices found
Coprocessor GeForce GTX 260 (1)

I can get work from GPUGRID, but all WUs error out immediately after one second with a Windows error message popup saying-

3)
If I run boinc.exe manually, and then start the BOINC manager, it is the same as in case 2).
(Actually I don't understand why it would make a difference if I start boinc.exe manually, or boinc.exe is started from the BOINC manager? Don't know why other people say it works for them that way...)

4)
Even if I try to run boinc.exe as an administrator (right click boinc.exe/run as administrator) I get the same as in case 2 and 3.

----
All the tests have been made on the same computer - Core2Quad Q9300, 2GB DDR2 1066, EVGA GeForce GTX260, Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit, BOINC 6.3.10 x86_64, Nvidia drivers from 177.35 to 177.92 beta and Folding@home is running fine since a few weeks wihout a single error on this GPU...

If I should try something else please let me know. Or if it would help you, I would also give you remote access to this computer.

Stefan

Stefan, did you already reset the project? This "Output file ... absent" is typical for not resetting after the upgrade to 6.41 / 6.43,

MrS - Thank you! You're da man! ;-)
It's eventually working now!

I completely forgot about the resetting because I actually never computed a WU on this host... Let's see how the GTX 260 on Vista64 performs compared to my 9800 GTX SC and the 8800 GT on Linux 64. :)

Great news!

So now we have it officially: GPU-GRid works under Vista 32/64, but you mustn't install as a service.

Of course it works, I work since the 27th of August with my 8800GT under Vista Ultimate 64bit and since 29th of August with my GTX280 under Vista Ultimate 64bit. But the BOINC.EXE 6.3.10 is a memory pig, needs up to 1 GB RAM after some running time. It's no problem for me, I have 8 GB RAM, but better is to restart every day. Maybe the next version runs without a daily babysitter.

I have mentioned this problem to BOINC dev.

That's what would be called a memory leak rather than a memory pig. I had my 6.3.10 running for about a week on XP 32 and just restarted it to check, but it consumed exactly the same amount of RAM as before (read from taskmanager), so no problem here.

BOINCMgr.exe is taking 117MB on my comp after a day n a half of being installed. BOINC 64bit 6.3.10, server 2008 x64, 4GB RAM. Running 4 projects, with several hundred tasks in total queued to run.

On Vista Ultimate 64 bit after a running time of 10.5 hours they use actually 372,340 K, on my XP Pro 64 bit only 25.864 K. On my second Vista Ultimate 64 bit 441.564 K after a runtime of 15.75 hours. Looks not like a one-time error.
