So I decided to upgrade my GPU, while not going with the card of choice due to limitations in the PSU of the CPU I had to put it in, and some monetary concerns, I got a GT 640 which seems a more than able GPU. Well turns out the specific card I got did not fit dimensionally into the Tower I wanted ( The double form factor passively cooled GPU did not fit into the Dell Opti-plex set up I had).

So did I return the GPU?

No instead I built an entire system around the GPU. It is up and crunching and has already returned its first WCG tasks, hopefully it turns in a GPU grid task in the next few hours.

Has anyone else had a seemingly addictive reaction to crunching?

Ha! You see nobody answers. That's the first sign... they refuse to discuss their addiction because they're in denial. Addicts all of them, except me of course. Yes, I know the GF left and the fridge is full of rotten food but that's all the cat's fault, not mine, it purrs far too loud.

I have an AMD 7970 due to arrive any day and I think it might not fit in the intended case too, like your GTX-640. Think I'll just pull the mobo out and mount it in a free standing fashion, not sure yet, or I might put a zip disk on the angle grinder and chop out whatever part of the case is in the way.

Cat + open-case + inherent curiosity = mess

Crunching is catchy, but for most it's more of an interest or a hobby than an addiction. If it was addictive then the governments would be handing out free meths and GPU's. There would also be lots of crazy cruncher videos of 'crunching addicts' running into lamp posts and so on.

Skgiven,

While I understand what you are saying, if you are very into a hobby it can be an addiction of sorts. Not all addictions leave you laid out scratching at your skin. Some can just cause you to make irrational decisions when it comes to approaching that item.

Sadly I had read that definition of addiction before and it makes sense when you start to apply it to non-medical or substance items. I mean there are people that are addicted to all sorts of things, and while collecting ceramics, stamps, money, toys, etc... may seem far less harmful than having a dependency on some drug. But I still think it could be considered an addiction if to accomplish that task you are still not quite acting in your best interst, or acting slightly irrationally.

Hence: instead of returning the card like any reasonable person would, I spent 5 times the amount of the card to build an entire system around it, just so I wouldn't need to return the card.

While it is a hobby yes, that by most definitions are irrational, as I had honestly not planned on buying and building a computer for several years yet.

Who says returning it would be the reasonable, sensible action? You defined a goal (to crunch with a 640) then discovered achieving that goal would cost you more than anticipated. Being the tenacious sort you adjusted your strategy and achieved your goal. That's healthy behaviour in my books.

It would be unreasonable and self-destructive behaviour if you could not afford to build the system to put it into and had to use money intended for rent/mortgage/groceries to pay for it or had to finance it over many months at a high interest rate. Oh wait... is that it? Is this a cry for help? You want us to maybe send some groceries to carry you over to next payday?
