Hopefully, a lot more GPUs and CPUs will join after the holiday presents.

At GPUGRID we are going away starting next week. The first to come back is Nate by the end of the year, early new year.

Also still remember that if you want, there is the possibility to make a donation. Donations are used to fund a PhD student which can work on Gpugrid. Last year we have received many donations. Thanks to everybody.

This year we also did well in terms of scientific publications:

N. Stanley, S. Esteban and G. De Fabritiis, Kinetic modulation of a disordered protein domain by phosphorylation, Nat. Commun. 5, 5272 (2014). pdf

G. Lauro, N. Ferruz, S. Fulle, M. J. Harvey, P. W. Finn, and G. De Fabritiis,Reranking Docking Poses Using Molecular Simulations and Approximate Free Energy Methods, J. Chem. Inf. Model., 2014, 54 (8), pp 2185–2189.

*** S. Doerr and G. De Fabritiis, On-the-fly learning and sampling of ligand binding by high-throughput molecular simulations, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 10 (5), pp 2064–2069(2014).pdf

P. Bisignano, S. Doerr, M. J. Harvey, A. Favia, A. Cavalli and G. De Fabritiis, Kinetic characterization of fragment binding in AmpC β-lactamase by high-throughput molecular simulations, J. Chem. Inf. Model., 2014, 54 (2), pp 362–366. pdf

X. Huang and G. De Fabritiis, Understanding Molecular Recognition by Kinetic Network Models Constructed from Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Adv Exp Med Biol 2014; 797: 107-114. pdf

** E. Dainese, G. De Fabritiis, A. Sabatucci, S. Oddi, C. Angelucci, C. Di Pancrazio, T. Giorgino, N. Stanley, B. Cravatt, and M. Maccarrone, Membrane lipids are key-modulators of the endocannabinoid-hydrolase FAAH, Biochem J. 2014 Feb 1;457(3):463-72.

Almost all of these works have been made with your contribution. From next year we are also trying to have a larger impact in biomedicine, further developing new small molecules which can be used for treatment of disease.

Best,
gdf

Q. Will the WUs queue still be fed over Xmas break ie. anybody monitoring?

If not - we may as well shutdown our clients down until the new year to save energy.

Have a good one

This is a good question, as the short queue is empty, and the long queue has 552 unsent workunits while it has 2821 in progress (so it could run dry very shortly).

I wish you, and all the participants of GPUGrid a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas -- Thanks for fixing the GPUGrid bugs that I reported this year! It's working wonderfully for me right now, loving how smooth it is. Enjoy your well-earned break!

Unsent work units are running out. I really need to know what to expect because my computers will be left unattended during the break.

My advice is to pick another GPU project which is of secondary importance to you, like Asteroids@home, subscribe to it, and then set it to 0 priority. That way, BOINC will only take a work unit if GPUgrid is empty.

No, it's not as useful to humanity as GPUgrid papers may become, but think of it as drying up the competing project's work units. Their projects will end faster, and people will wind up back here.

I have the following as my backup GPU projects (all set as 0-resource-share so BOINC only gets work when it can't get work from my primary projects):
- SETI@Home
- Einstein@Home
- SETI@Home Beta
- Albert@Home
- Asteroids@Home

Basically, once you set it up, you'll never have to worry about GPUGrid running out ever again. If they do, so be it, your GPUs will still serve humanity by using backup projects!

Set it and forget it.

Jacob, thanks for the list. I for one haven't been running anything but GPUGRID on my NV GPUs lately so it's good to know. One thing though: there are a number of recent BOINC builds that aren't working with backup projects. I believe the latest 7.4.36 does function properly in that respect. You probably know the ones that don't and a quick heads up to people might save them some grief.

You're right, I had forgotten about that.

7.4.27 (the current public release) does not properly fetch work from backup projects (set to 0-resource-share).
7.4.36 (a release candidate that so far has been VERY stable) DOES fix the issue.

I'd recommend getting 7.4.36 if you intend on relying on backup projects.
You can find it here:

Happy holidays!

It would seem so, but I keep getting a whiff or two. I've snagged two long-runs since the server has been stuck on "1"... :D

Cheers and happy holidays to all! :-)

If my experience is representative, only BARNA work units are left.

Keeping my eye on the batch numbers, it looks like they've got sequential computations, with each work unit being calculated 200 times (i.e. 100 and it's validation). The BARNA workunits I've been getting are in the ~60 range. At this rate we could be 'running on fumes' for a while, with most computers getting a Work Unit, most of the time.

I've been getting 4 types of long GPU WUs yesterday and today, but BARNA are the most common.

Ouch! In this case my shiny new GTX970 may run dry.. and I'm already away without remote access.

Sorry. We missed it in testing.

Just let it go, and if the GPUs gets a vacation, then it probably needed it anyway :)

Feel free to join BOINC Alpha (if you haven't already), so you can help us test to make sure we don't miss scenarios such as this.

Happy holidays,
Jacob

Asteroids@home is currently offline, and therefore not a suitable choice.

Poem@Home has both CPU and GPU workunits, and is a better choice based on what they do.

BOINC 7.4.36 has been released to the public, and is now the recommended version.
