I'm have problems with WUs while running. I'm running on WinXP Pro 2 core host. While WU is running alone, it takes up 50% and Explorer.exe takes up 50%. When runnng with a WU from another project, It take 25% and Other WUs 25% and Explorer 50%. When WU was received it had 11 hours to complete, but it is running slow and looks like it'll take over 100 hours. How can I stop Explorer.exe from hogging up all the processing?

I downloaded 178_08 for WinXP. That's the driver it gave me to download.

Thanks

Bill

Edited. It is happening with 6.3.14 and 6.3.17 both

disable the indexing service. I have found that to be the culprit for high CPU usage from explorer.exe. Also check to see if you have 2 explorer.exe running at once.

something to keep an eye on: your 8500GT is very slow and will probably miss the deadline for a lot of WUs, even if you fix the explorer.exe problem. A 9600GT, which is more than twice as fast as your card, is recommended as the minimum.

I disabled the indexing and everythig that I could. It's still tearing up explorer. I jsut suspended all other WUs. Now, WU is 50% and Explorer.exe is 50%. Hopefully, It'll make the deadline. :D Thanks a lot. I'll have to check out a better GeForce.

I think 178.08 was some beta driver. You could try 178.13 or 178.24, which are both WHQL and are running fine for a lot of people here. Getting a faster card would be nice, but this won't solve your software problem ;)

Information regarding buying a new card can be found in these threads, though it's not up to date. Especially the price/performance ratio of GTX 260/280 improved considereably since the update to application 6.48. Only downside of these is a higher price and IMO that the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 is not compatible with them.

I couldn't find a way to get a newer driver. At least with the link to Nvida. When I selected WinXP, that's the driver it gave me. Where can I get a newer driver?

Just checked: download drivers, XP + Geforce 9 + English (doesn't matter for drivers anyway) -> 178.24.

Thanks. I found it and got it installed. It's still terring up Explorer.exe though and doesn't look like it'll make the deadline. I'll try to find a way to tune it somehow. :D Thanks for all the help.

the explorer problem isn't related to BOINC. Ive seen it before, but I don't remember how I resolved the problem exactly. Its been to long since I have used XP :P

Know what you mean. Maybe, I'll send problem to Rom and see what he can come up with.
