I've tried searching the forums for how to enable/disable swan sync. Please feel free to delete this thread, but I can't find instructions. I have one W7 host on which I'd like to disable SWAN. I know this is has been a common question over the years, but my attempt to search for it has yielded nothing. Maybe we can create a sticky?

Thank you.

To switch Swan-Sync on:

In "System" - go to [Environmental Variables]
Look for the lower section called "System Variables", click on the [New] button below the list of System Variables.
Type swan_sync in the name field
Type 1 in the Value field
Click [OK] 3 times.
Exit BOINC manager with stopping all applications
Start BOINC manager.

For switching it off, change the value field from 1 to 0.

Sorry Erich56 to switch off you must delete/remove the swan_sync variable altogether and reboot computer. Changing the value will have no effect.

hm, I was almost sure that, long time ago, I did is this way - just to try out and to see the difference.
Maybe I remember wrongly and am mistaken now.
Of course, to delete the entry would be the safest way :-)

This should be pinned, I've been trying to figure this out for years

To enable swan_sync, should I use 1 or 0?

I keep seeing different suggestions on these boards...

Try both and you'll find it makes no difference.

They don't seem to make a difference. Maybe my GPU isn't that quick (OC'ed 1050 Ti).

hm, that's strange.
I don't think is has to do with the type of GPU.
For example, two of my GPUs I use for GPUGRID are "old" GTX750Ti - and even there I could notice the big difference .
With Swansync off, CPU usage was very low, with Swansync on, a CPU core is being used close to it's full capacity.

But does it do any more work - complete the tasks more quickly?

Otherwise, you're just wasting a core that could be doing something else.

Changing swan_sync to 1 has definitely made a change for me on GPUGRID. Not a lot of data points, but so far seeing 2 to 5% improvement in completion times.

Since I am in grcpool-2, here is a link to my tasks:

http://www.gpugrid.net//results.php?hostid=473538

However, it also had an unintended consequence in my backup project, Milkyway@home. I had that set up to run two GPU tasks at once using the app_config file. However, the swan_sync setting seemed to have dedicated one core for each task, not just one total for my one 1070 GPU. So, overall, when Milkyway is running, I lose one core previously being used on my CPU projects.

Can anyone confirm this is indeed what should/does happen? If so, is there any work-around? (I haven't convinced myself to try to run two GPUGRID tasks at once yet due to cooling problems on my bought Dell 8930 -- don't gag; I am saving up for my first build!)

i5-8400 6 core using Intel Turbo Boost to 3.8GHz
GTX 1070 from Dell (sort of a Founder's Edition?), OC only 15MHz on both GPU and Memory clocks using Afterburner
Windows 10

Obviously more powerful CPU and weaker GPU: SWAN_SYNC gives less.
But in my case...
Few days ago I tried trick and my run times decresed from ~ 20k to ~17,5k seconds (yes I'm aware of different WUs - that's average).
GPU is OC 1080Ti, but CPU is old XEON 1230V2 - 2 WU at once.
