Who here is getting the AMD Threadripper 2990x when it comes out? I can't wait to put 64 threads on these CPU tasks.

Do you think the lack of a memory controller on two of the CPU dies for the 2990wx would be hindering the performance of these WUs too much to warrant the much greater cost over the 2950x?

How memory intensive would you say these WUs are?

It depends on the project. I've results for Ryzen 2700X, Threadripper 1950X, 2950X, 2990WX, I7 7700K and FX-8350. Now I'm testing Xeon 7980XE, few more waiting in the queue so I need about a week to end the article.

I think that the best choice (because of performance per W and especially per $) has 1950X, especially now when it is on sale. But I need to run more tests.

The 1950X is certainly an interesting CPU... if the mainboards were a little cheaper. There basically is no board below 300€ available here in Europe. (sigh)

Would you say the 2990Wx is fully utilized with GPUGrid WUs? Is the performance near double the 2950x or only 50% faster?

Sadly much closer to 50% or even less :(

Hmm I guess a 2950x is in my future then. Thank you for the help!

No problem, that's part of my job ;)
2990WX is a WCG monster but even there the scaling is far from 100%.

There are a couple of Seti members who are using the 2990WX on the project. One is having fairly good results, the other not so much. The problem is the cores which don't have direct memory access process the task much slower than a task on a direct memory access core. Plus the challenge to cool that many cores takes a toll on the clocks of the cores and they don't run anywhere near base clock.

So the member who is not having good luck is auctioning off the 2990WX on eBay currently and will likely drop down to a 2950X.

Message 51736 - Posted: 1 May 2019 | 5:51:56 UTC

i have threadripper 1950x, 32gb Ram and gpu is gigabyte gtx 1060 mini oc 6gb.

right now i have overclocked my gpu with +150mHz (running around core clock 2012 mHz). power limit is 116%, memory not overclocked (running 3802 mHz).

2 questions.

1). how do i setup boinc 7.14.2 (windows 10, 64 bit enterprise) so that i also can use my threadripper 1950x cpu for gpugrid-projects? because my gpu-load is about 93% at 2012 mHz, but cpu is around 4% at 3690 mHz (cpu not overclocked)

2). what are overclock parameters to use getting most performance from gpu (gtx 1060 mini, 6gb)?

in boinc i can see (0,978 cpu + 1 nvidia gpu). what does this mean?

sorry for my questions. i am totally new in gpu-projects. in past i have done some small CPU-projects. this is my first gpu-trial.

thanks in advance
erik

Hello erik,

To enable CPU work for this project go into your profile and select GPUGRID Preferences. Select "Edit GPUGRID Preferences" and make sure CPU work is selected, I also like "If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications."

Make sure you click the "Server Status" link in the top right of the website to check if there is "Quantum Chemistry" work which is for CPU. Long Work Units and Short Work Units (WUs) are for GPU.

For the most part we do not recommend overclocks and if you do, I recommend mostly just GPU core and not memory as you could have memory related issues and crashes which will significantly slow down throughput if you have even one crashed WU.

"0,978 cpu + 1 nvidia gpu" I think means it uses 0.978 out of 1 CPU thread and 1 GPU.

Currently, this project does not have any CPU WUs but that may change any day now. In the mean time I recommend loading your CPU with work from another project such as Rosetta@home

thanks for your reply.

now i see why is my cpu not loaded fully. there are no working-units for cpu -:)

but....if i change my settings on GPUGRID PREFERENCES page in a way NOT to use CPU at all, then i will only get GPU working-units?

then i am willing to change

Use CPU yes ===> changeing to no

Use Central Processing Unit (CPU) yes ===> changeing to no

is this enough change to make sure gpugrid will only use my graphic card?

and another question.....
what is this meant to be? "Maximum CPU % for graphics
0 ... 100 100"
maximum cpu % for graphic?

and....i am running windows 10, 64bit, amd threadripper 1950x, 32gb ram and gigabyte gtx 1060 mini.
do i need to enable SwanSync in windows 10? because right now it is enabled SwanSync

At the moment, CPU WUs only work on Linux with Windows WUs in beta. I would recommend disabling CPU work temporarily if you are on windows as in the foreseeable future there will not be a windows CPU app. Keep an eye on the forums to see any additional developments with software!

As for GPU, the default settings work just fine in GPUGRID Preferences. I always recommend SWAN_SYNC but it appears you have already enabled that.
