Can I participate in GPUGRID with that version of BOINC running XP Pro x64?

I suggest Boinc 6.5.0 | |

I don't see a 6.5.0 listed. Only 6.4.5 as reccomended version and 6.6.2 development and 6.2.19 as older.

Go with 6.4.5 t get started, and read the threads for client issues.

OK, I downloaded and installed boinc_6.5.0_windows_x86_64.exe.

OK, I downloaded and installed boinc_6.5.0_windows_x86_64.exe. 6.5.0 should be fine and don't read the thread on client issues, unless you're having issues. Otherwise you may get mad with all the information ;) RAC for GPU-Grid should be able to reach 10k in 24/7 operation, depending on clock speed and whether it has 192 or 216 shaders. Otherwise you may get mad with all the information ;) You once asked for help with the proper English formulation for a colloquial expression ... may I make a suggestion here? "Get mad" is when a person becomes enraged or angry ... "Go mad" is when they become insane ... So, if I may, "Otherwise you may go mad with all the information" The intent here is to be helpful and not offensive, if it is, let me know and I will stop ... :) ____________

OK, I downloaded and installed boinc_6.5.0_windows_x86_64.exe. Yes, don't research blindly on your own. What kind of RAC can I expect with this card? With two GTX 260 (192&216, both oced @666/1500/1150) I reached 15k RAC, one additional, infrequently used 9800GX2 raised my RAC to 16,5k, don´t expect too much from that single card.

When you add a GPU to your farm, it will take a while for the RAC to change (someone else will be along to explain the math later...). If you look at the results from just your GX2, it should be doing around 9k per day. The single 260 will do a good job, and is a great card to start with. Time to go and shovel out the driveway...;) ____________ Consciousness: That annoying time between naps...... So, if I may, "Otherwise you may go mad with all the information" Thanks, that's much more in line with what I actually intended to say! But I think our efforts are in vain.. I just noticed that according to his nick he's crazy now, so I guess he already made it through the entire forum. MrS ____________ Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002

So, if I may, "Otherwise you may go mad with all the information" Well, the only thing that bothers me is that my wife keeps hiding my axe ... I mean how can you be a homicidal axe murderer without an axe? It is about time for me to go looking again ... be back in a little while ...

OK, Card is in and is detected by BOINC. Driver version is 180.48. BOINC Version is 6.5.0. Do I need to change any settings or should this be good to go?

Can't see your machine yet.. if you run XP64 you may want to uprade to 182.22, the older ones crash the WUs. With XP32 and Vista 32/64 you should be fine.

You should be able to see it now. I just attached and got 4 tasks.

Interesting, still can't see your host. Anyway, upgrading the driver during a WU should be fine. Just make sure to stop the BOINC client (not pnly closing the manager) before doing the upgrade. Runtime on youe GTX 260 should be 6 - 7h.

I take it GPUGRID has checkpointing then. I really hate loosing work.

Runtime on youe GTX 260 should be 6 - 7h. I think he needs to do a scheduler request again to make the machine show up ... Your 260 should be doing 4-6 tasks a day times 2.5K per task ... The CPU usage of the 6.22 application of GPU Grid will "steal" a little from one of your cores to feed teh GPU but the loss is very small now though if you are ultra sensitive to the RAC on SaH you may be able to note it ... Task switching between SaH CUDA and GPU Grid is still rocky with all the clients ... I ran into some issues with it with 6.5.0 ... though I ran down all the SaH work I have so that I can get back to concentrating on GPU Grid ... With 6.5.0 BOINC Manager you should not need any of the app_info or other hack files to get it to run the GPU in parallel with the CPU tasks... at least I have not had to do that ...

I did another scheduler request just now. Maybe you'll be able to see the computer now.

Thanks! Thanks again to all of you for helping me out. I really don't like BOINC 6.5.0 though. It doesn't shut down right. I can close the manager but the science keeps on running. I've checked the box to shut down the science when I close the manager but it's still not right. The only way for me to shut them down is by going into task manager or by restarting the computer. Generally speaking though, the only time I ever shut down boinc on that system is after an update that requires a restart anyway.

The Manager is only to look at the operation of BOINC and the Science Applications ... you can use the "Advanced" menu to shut down the client that the BOINC Manager is connected to ... on windows then you can close the BOINC Manager and all will be gone. Opening BOINC Manager will restart the BOINC Client and the science applications.

I dont think I explained very well. Clicking on X should only close manager and leave BOINC projects running.

I just tried it ... they broke something ... 6.5.0 also does not shut down the science applications when closing. Did you try the advanced menu option to close/stop the client? That still seems to work for me ...

I think you'll find they have made deliberate changes in this area. But with so many changes it is hard to tell what is a bug and what is a planned change. Remember some versions did not go forward when the second level version number changed so features you might have had in earlier versions don't appear in later ones but may appear again with yet later versions. These shutdown changes got tied up in one of these on-off-on sequences. Phoneman1

Well, I posted a note to the Dev list so that they can fix it or ignore it as they choose ... but,it is a rather glaring issue in that it is very noticeable that the Manager does not do what it says it is going to do ...

Just noticed something else a bit odd. This is new. When I first started GPUGRID when boinc started it showed 3 CPU's and 1 CUDA task running. However there were 4 other tasks running and 1 CUDA. Now it says 0.17 CPU's and 1 CUDA. There are still 4 other tasks running besides the CUDA.
