LOL

Paul,

It looks like you were successful in getting them to fix my memory over-commit musical chairs bug. I wish you luck with the other scheduler issues!

Unfortunately, the last of the huge Lattice GARLI tasks I was running has completed, so I don't have any massive taskas that could trigger the same situation again. Therefore, I can't test to see if the fix works. Oh well.

Thanks,
Mike

Well, yes ...

But you see ... it was a bug that hit SOMEONE ELSE and not me ... so it has to be valid ...

It is only the ones that hit me that they ignore ... or at least it seems that way ...

Sadly they use C++ with a rather strange style which means I usually cannot make heads nor tails out of the code... worse the comments are sparse and other documentation is non-existent ...

At least there seems to be some glimmer of recognition that this is not a non-issue but is something that is a problem that is only going to grow ... I mean, my "widest" system runs 13 tasks at a time (without FreeHAL work, with FH it is 16) ... now consider the newest chips, drop two of them in and I am at 21 (32; 16 CPU, 4 GPU, and 12 NCI) tasks running at the same time ... who knows what we will be seeing in a couple years ...

And, that theoretical system might be even wider if I put 3 GPU cards in, or the cards I put in have 4 GPU "cores" so that we are running 4 tasks per card vice the current two maximum ... because as we both know, as capabilities come to the fore ... they WILL be used ... shrink the dies of the GPUs and they WILL be putting 4 on a card ... if for no other reason than to have bragging rights ...

As it turns out, I backed out 6.2.22 -- Yes, it fixed that problem, but it introduced other, more serious problems.

Of course, that was 3 days ago, and I'm not sure I remember exactly what the problem was. I think it may have been leaving on of the CPU cores idle and running only 3 CPU tasks instead of 4.

You are lucky, when I tried 6.6.21 and 6.6.22 I got NO cores running GPU work ...

Going back to 6.6.20 or 6.5.0 caused work to immediately start. I have reported the problem and as usual no hint if the developers are listening or not ...

As near as I can find out Rom is using a dual core system and it likely only has a single GPU installed and of course that means that it is not easy to see issues that affects those of us with "wider" systems.

If I was still working I would run out and buy him a pair of 9800GT(2) cards so he could have a 4 GPU system for fairly little investment ...

Ah but to be fair it turned out to be that little checkbox and not BOINC's fault. The default changed from being ticked (in 6.6.20) to unticked (6.6.21 onwards).

As Paul is aware, but the others reading this thread may not be, 6.6.23 is out. I suppose I should start a seperate message thread for it.

Well, the old 9600GSO would also do the trick ;)
