I keep being informed that WUs have been terminated due to computation errors. I am running BOINC 6.6.20 and use GPU is toggled on. H-E-L-P!

It would help in diagnosing the problem if your computers were not hidden.

your task log error says
ERROR: mdsim.cu, line 569: No CUDA-capable devices found.

but the FAQ list says that while the GeForce 8400 GS is not suggested, it is supported. So unless the spec has changed I am not sure why you are erroring out.

As you can see, a CUDA device has been found.

A couple of points (which may be informative, but won't directly solve the problem).

BOINC may detect a CUDA capable device, but that doesn't mean it's a GPUGRID capable device. BOINC will see the GPU, say it's good, and assign it a GPUGRID task. The GPUGRID task will then more closely look at the GPU's capabilities, see that it doesn't support the required operations, and then throw an error.

That sounds suspiciously like the behavior you're seeing. The only problem is that, as was already pointed out, although your GPU probably is too slow to complete work units within the 5 day deadline (hence the not-recommended designation), it SHOULD work according to the table in the FAQ. I can't explain the error. Perhaps someone else can.

However, th bottom line is that unless your CPU is seriously overclocked AND is running 24/7, it might not be worthwhile to figure out why it's not working. Even if it worked, you probably won't be able to complete the work in time.

It should work, but be too slow. Maybe it is not properly installed, an old driver for instance.

He's using driver 182.08, which is new enough for CUDA. It wouldn't hurt to try a newer one, though.

Are you using remote desktop with this machine? Is it a discrete graphics card or integrated into the chipset? (maybe an easy way to check: is the monitor plugged into the motherboard or into a expansion card?)

Thanks for the suggestions and help. It may be far less complicated to do my crunching elsewhere, but it was worth a try.

Ignore that, I seem to have got it running by installing a new driver. Now I have to find out if it will complete in time.
Thanks again for everything.

1 Hour 37 minutes and 7 seconds to complete 1% means it won't complete within the allocated time. That's a pity.

That may still be the case, but keep it running for a while longer, the %'s shown are not absolute in terms of accuracy, and it "learns" from previous runs in terms of time to complete and work to do. If its still the same after (say) 30% complete in terms of run time, then yup, its a bust. Extrapolate the completed percentage vis a vis time already run, dont use the projected time to complete figure.

Zy

I have an 8600GT (32 shader) that is returning current work in the 50-52 hour range. The 8400GS (16 shader) with a similar shader clock (around 1500) should return work in just a bit over twice that time, or in other words, will push the 5-day deadline limit per workunit. Given the newly added "server cancels redundant work" feature, I'd be very curious to see how the 8400GS could do.

You could try seti@home on your GPU, it will easily manage to return these in time. You just have to take care to deselect astropulse WUs in your profile, if you don't want to run it on the cpu (I wouldn't ;) ).
